Diagnostic criteria

Normoglycaemia

Fasting plasma glucose <6.1 mmol/L

Intermediate hyperglycaemia (sometimes termed pre-diabetes)

Impaired fasting glucose

Fasting plasma glucose ≥6.1 mmol/L to <7.0 mmol/L

and

Two-hour post-ingestion of 75-g glucose load plasma glucose <7.8 mmol/L

Impaired glucose tolerance

Fasting plasma glucose <7.0 mmol/L

and

Two-hour post-ingestion of 75-g glucose load plasma glucose ≥7.8 mmol/L to <11.1 mmol/L

Type 2 diabetes mellitus

Fasting plasma glucose ≥7.0 mmol/L

or a

Two-hour post-ingestion of 75-g glucose load plasma glucose ≥11.1 mmol/L
